My husband Errol and I are big T.V. and movie buffs. Our idea of a fun night is laying on the bed watching a good show.
When a new baby is born, they require a lot of attention. When our daughter Sam had her second child, we wanted to do something special with her oldest Aya, to keep her from feeling left out. We started having Nana & Papa time at the movies.
I’m pretty sure the first movie we took her to was Finding Dory. That was when the “movie ice cream” began.
We always take her to the local Smitty’s cinema with the comfy chairs and full menus. The first time we went, we had just eaten lunch, so Papa and Aya decided on the “Double Matinee Sundae” for dessert. And from hence the tradition began.
Only once did Aya decide she wanted a meal instead.
Our son Nick’s daughter Emma stayed with us one weekend so we planned to see a movie. We originally were going to see Trolls but Emma had already seen it. We saw Moana instead and we all enjoyed it a lot! Emma thought our “Sundae” tradition was a good idea too!
The Smitty’s in our city was just recently relocated to a newly built cinema. We just went to it last weekend to see Peter Rabbit. They’ve changed a few things. It’s set up a little differently. There are new chairs and tables, and some of the items on the menu had changed. We were worried for a minute that they’d done away with our sundae, but no, there it was on the menu. Aya wasted no time in ordering it for herself. What a surprise it was to all of us when it came out of the kitchen about twice the size of the old ones! Needless to say, Aya wasn’t finishing this one. Papa had to help her out with that after she’d had all she could!
Taking Aya to the movies is always a lot of fun for all of us. It’s nice to have something that just the three of us share. We’re making memories that we’ll always have.
