My granddaughters Aya, who’s 7, and Aly who’s 3 do ballet and tap at a local dance studio.
Aly began to dance just this past September, but this was Aya’s third year of dancing. They attend weekly classes, rehearsing for a yearly recital that happened this year on April 27th and 28th. My husband Errol and I attended both nights. We enjoy watching the girls perform on stage. My son Tony and his wife Thea came up for the Saturday night performance.
Dress rehearsal was on the night before the first recital night. As outgoing a child as Aly usually is, she definitely had some stage fright. For her tap dance rehearsal, she just stood there, looking terrified. When it came time to rehearse her ballet dance, she did warm up a little, and did a little of the dance.
On the first night, their mom Sam got them ready by braiding and putting their hair up into buns. That’s quite a feat since Aya’s hair is so long that it reaches her legs! She applied some light makeup so they wouldn’t look washed out on stage.
After arriving at the Memorial Gym where it was to take place, Sam took them downstairs where all the dancers get dressed in their costumes and then wait for their turn on stage.
Aly was first with her tap dance. She still looked a bit scared, but seemed to be getting used to it a bit. She did tell me when she got home “Nana, everything is all red up there!” I told her she had to try to not look at the lights, and she said, “Well then everything is all black!”
Aya’s tap number was next. Just look at the smile! You can certainly tell she’s having fun!
Sam hurried back downstairs to ready them both for their ballet numbers.
Aly was first again and did much better this time. She got a lot more of the moves in. Both Aya and Aly have told me that they prefer ballet over tap.
Aya’s last dance was almost at the end of the show, which meant we had a bit of a wait. Aly changed and came up to sit with us. She was quite surprised that learn that being a dancer comes with it’s rewards!
Aya did awesome on her ballet routine. It was a lot of fun for us to watch!
The girls did a great job on Saturday night too, and the dance studio had it video-taped. I can’t wait to receive our copy of the dvd so that the girls can see themselves on stage. Aya always enjoys being able to do that. I’m sure Aly will think it’s pretty neat.
Errol and I couldn’t be prouder of our little dancers!
