As I’ve already said in My Peter Pan – Papa Errol, my husband Errol is always a lot of fun to be around. You just never know what’s going to happen next, or what’s going to come out of his mouth.
While shopping one day before Halloween, I turn around to find that Papa Errol’s and Aly’s appearances had undergone a slight transformation. Errol was definitely wearing the appropriate shirt for this!
Errol is an animal lover, and since losing our first two Cocker Spaniels, Errol and Duncan have become the best of friends. Duncan sits on the back of the couch in the window for most of the day, waiting and watching for his buddy to come home from work. As soon as Errol gets home, they are inseparable. Where Errol goes, so goes Duncan.
Being a typical Cocker Spaniel, Duncan has long ears. They touch the floor as he walks, and leaves a trail of water behind after he gets a drink. The other night we had a casserole that was very much like Shepard’s pie. The dish I baked it in had a fair amount of scraps and liquid still in it after I put what I wanted into a storage container. Errol and I thought that Duncan would enjoy such a treat. Never did I expect Errol to use the doughnut, that we sometimes have Duncan wear to stop him from chewing on himself, in this manner. Apparently this is Errol’s idea of a Duncan scrunchy!
Our good friend Missy took us in her truck one day to pick up a washing machine. Errol rode in the back seat. At some point, Missy glanced into the back to find that Errol had found a hat that she’d worn on Cinco de Mayo and was just waiting for one of us to notice.
When you want Errol to do something for you, be conscious of how you ask. We both felt that it was time to paint the house a few years ago. We have cedar shingles and they’d become quite faded. He came to me and asked what color I wanted him to pick up. My response was, “Anything but red.” “Okay” he replied, and off he went. When he arrived home he immediately set to painting the side of the house. After an hour or so, I thought I’d go check and see how he was doing. Imagine my surprise to find the entire side of my house barn red! “What are you doing?” I asked in disbelief. “Painting the house red like you said,” he responded. “I said anything BUT red!” He replied “Look, I asked you what color you wanted the house, then I listened very carefully for a color. You said red. I can’t help it you didn’t answer the question right.”
Having had issues with my left knee, I normally take the 13 steps to our deck fairly slowly. I’d been having physical therapy for it though, and it was feeling quite good one night as I went up the steps. I remarked to Errol that I felt that I was doing the stairs pretty quickly. His response? “You’re moving like your ass is on fire and your hair’s a catchin’!” You have to love him!
